Interest in telecommunications dates back to the 1940s when Haji Abdullah Alireza & Co. Ltd. with the support of ITT of the USA, installed the first broadcasting station in Jeddah, and it started to market a sophisticated range of private automatic telephone exchanges and ancillary equipment. It was also involved in and represented ITT, Marconi and Lockheed consortium for the installation of the first modern air traffic control system in the Kingdom in the 1970s.
